A stamped steel cover does nothing to hold the carrier bearing caps in place, which is why hard launches walk the caps and eat the ring gear. This cover is cast aluminum and bolts two support studs against the main caps, so the housing stops flexing where it matters, and it adds a magnetic drain plug so you stop pumping metal through the gears.
